SWARM was an immersive experience set within an hedonistic nightclub, where every night was a brand new beginning. Audience members stepped into the spotlight, danced and drank with performers, as the narrative unfolded around them. This is a club that reacts to the people within it, audience members directly impacted on the performance, from the colour of the lights to the prices of the drinks at the bar.
In order to create the impression of time passing in relation to the narrative within a functioning nightclub, my concept was to create a fluidly mixed score of electronic tracks which steadily increased in tempo scene by scene, culminating in a climax and then resetting to the opening tempo. The tracks themselves needed to be club-like & danceable but sparse enough that dialogue could be heard by the audience. For further clarification of scene change for actors and audience (given that the music flowed automatically throughout), I used dmx software in ableton to trigger colour changes in the led lighting fixture. Finally I installed conductive buttons around the space which triggered additional sound and light changes when touched by curious audience members.
